Rationale

I care about the issue of body image in the ballet community because I am a dancer myself and spent 20-30 hours a week training, with most of that training being in ballet so it is very relevant to me. It’s no secret that body image is an issue in dance, especially for young pre-professional dancers and even I have experienced it in some ways. It’s very easy for this to happen, considering young dancers spent most of their time in tight uniforms that hid nothing, and most professional dancers in the media have a certain stereotypical look that a lot of dancers feel they need to look like to be successful. I hope to find out that even though this issue does exist, it is possible to find a solution and that there are already people, company’s and organizations that promote body positivity and that this issue is on its way to being solved. The main idea I am using is that body image is a huge issue today and that the dance community is making an effort to solve it, but more still needs to be done.  I believe I can explain my concept clearly and I believe that with further research, I will be able to explain my concept with even more clarity and confidence. I have not reached a final conclusion, but I do have ideas. I need to do some more research and planning before I decide on my conclusion though.I have encountered this issue a lot in my life. I have been dancing for 15 years and through that time a lot of people I know have suffered with body image issues and even I have had a bit of minor body image issues especially when I was younger. As well not only am I a pre-pro dancer currently, but I want to dance professionally as my career and eventually move from performing to choreographing and teaching young dancers.  When I become a teacher, I will have to be educated on this topic so I can help my students work through it so I think learning more about it will benefit me in the future not only for myself but my future students.I have not considered the fact that maybe the ballet community is not on its way to solving the problem. But I am leaning towards that they are so far into my research because I have found certain dancers and organizations that are supporting body positivity including Under Armor and All that Dance studio in Seattle. I believe my opinion should be listened to because I have a lot of real life experience in the dance community and I know that body image is a major issue and has been for quite some time. The things that are happening to encourage body positivity need to be highlighted and more things need to happen and I am a huge advocate for that.
